If you just want to transfer files then depending on what network card you
have a good combination is Kermit for DOS which includes it's own TCP/IP
stack in combination with a packet driver for your card. Very low or no
memory overhead if you unload the driver after use.

For packet drivers see http://www.crynwr.com/
Kermit is available for your MAC too
