That's probably the easiest thing to do.

I have the same scales on my mini-mill. I was going to just solder cables
directly to the pads and silicone it to death to keep the wires in and
crud out.

Have you tried powering the scales externally? That should work if you
take out the battery. I believe power is on the two outer pins.

Hmm, maybe that's not the scales I'm thinking of. You could still hack
into the battery compartment.
