Hmmmm, it's an interesting question whether a lathe or mill needs
more power. Of course, it would depend on how you were rating the
machines? If they were rated on cubic inches per minute of metal
removal which seems to be an accepted rating system for mills, I
would guess that a lathe is a more efficient metal removal tool per
hp.

I'm basing my opinion of the fact that lathe tool profiles can be
optimized for free cutting easier than a rotary milling cutter.


Getting back to the original question, does Haas overrate their
machine's hp? Check the amperage draw of the motor, convert that to
hp and you've got your answer.
