Spyware is the term used for tracking (and occasionally malicious) software
that is put into place through cookies in you browser or registry changes.
Most of it is used by companies like Doubleclick to track your movements for
marketing reasons, but it slows your browsing down, invades your privacy and
is a security risk.
My recommendation:

Download AdAware (is free and pretty good) from www.lavasoft.de
Run it and save the spyware found log as a text file. In Internet Explorer,
under Tools, Internet Options, go to the Privacy tab
Cut and paste the sites from your log and block them. Please note that the
www portion of the name will not show. Some sites end in .com, some in
.net, etc. You can be especially sure if you look up the sites found in
your cookies and copy the exact names from there.

They post regular updates to the lookup list, so update the software and run
it from time to time to make sure you haven't acquired a previously unlisted
one.

You will be amazed at the crap it finds on your computer the first time you
run it if you use the internet on a regular basis.

I have heard of this and tried to monitor it once, for a couple
weeks, but with no 'hit's or 'no spyware found" I deleted the
software figuring it was all hype.

Can you elaborate about spyware ?
