It depends on the design and type of Driver, as to if and how much
Inductance plays a role.
Really... One of the Driver Design Engineers on this post can best
explain.
I think the following can happen...
Because, as you mentioned, "It is quicker to charge and discharge its
coils" can be too much of a good thing.
Some Drivers "Chop" (turn on and off) a motors winding at a high rate.
This improves the final Torque.
This "Chopping" is controlled by an Op-Amp (Comparator) that detects
the rise and fall of the Motor Winding Current.
If the Inductance is too low, the rise time is so rapid, that the
Op-Amp and related circuitry, does not have enough time to respond
(Turn Off Motor Current), allowing the Winding Current to exceed the
Drive Transistors max current rating.
