Peter,

Great on topic post.

The first question I have is what are you wanting to saw? Big difference
between what I would design if I wanted to automate cutting of steel
bars into lengths from wanting to cut balsa blocks into sheets.

I have pretty well worked out the design and have purchased the parts to
make a CNC balsa saw. It will be intended to cut 1/32" - 1/4" sheets
from a 24" balsa block. It will be strictly a 2 axis machine and will
use a fixed circular blade with the block being moved past it. I can go
into more detail if this is similar to what you think you need.

Currently I am sawing balsawood into sheets 18" long and from .006" to
.125" thick on my Bridgett (my Bridgeport Series II) using an 8" HSS
circular blade in a custom mount driven by a 5 hp Setco direct drive
spindle that is mounted on the side of the head to the right and a
little behind the stock spindle. Unless you are planning to use it chop
saw style getting the blade more than a degree or 2 from parallel to the
plane of motion is not good. If it is trammed so the leading edge is
deeper into the wood than the trailing edge you will bet a concave face
on the sheet of wood if is more than just a little bit. If the other way
you get the back of the blade dragging and chewing up the wood and is
there is enough drag ruining the blade. Really bad things happen when
the blade core drags on the wood block.
