Graham,
If you are having noise problems with the Proxxon, don't even think
about a larger mill. The Proxxon is the quietest mill I own (others are
Sherline, Shoptask, Bridgeport) by a considerable margin.
For keeping the noise from transmitting through the bench I have in the
past mounted the machine to a wood plate then set the plate on a
neoprene foam pad like they used to use under typewriters. The wood
plate give the machine some stability and the rubber foam pad cuts the
noise transmission.
