I've been away for a while and am just catching up with the post. I see
that this thread has gone quite, but going over the rest of the post, I
didn't see any reference to my point.
The issue of sound proofing seems to have been covered quite well, but
ventilation was not mentioned that I saw. There is a lot of heat put out
with the motors, and with the milling it's self. With extended use in a
small, tight enclosure, you could easily reach the thermal limits of the
machine.
Back when I was servicing computers (way back), I had a customer who's
business was making cardboard boxes. The machine I serviced had a large
hard drive (18" disk If I remember correctly) and a selectric
typewriter. In an office environment, it was quite loud. Suddenly, the
disk drive started failing quite regularly. I would replace it, and a few
days later it was a goner again. After the third one, I found that my
customer had made a large, multi ply cardboard box to cover the machine to
cut the noise. It was cooking the thing. Don't do that with your mill
If you provide some baffled air vents and a fan, it should not be a
problem, but if you leave no ventilation, your failure rate is going to go
up quite a bit. While a mill is not as sensitive as a computer, it will
still not like the higher temperatures.
