I'm not an expert on CAM software but from what i've read its not a
great program for the money. I wouldnt reccomend downloading the
demo either. I made this mistake and the bunch from bobcam have been
harrasing me ever since. Constant e-mails, bunch of letters and
several phone calls trying to sell thier product. After going
through this I would not buy bobcam for $5. The demo that I did have
didnt seem too exciting either. Visual mill seems to be one of the
nicer demos that i've tried, defenatly worth looking into.

With regard to driving step direction machines, most CAM software do
not have CNC software (used to control step/dir machines) built in.
This isnt a big deal though because TurboCNC is available for $20
and its a great CNC control program. Its fine for what most people
need.
