I've version 17, which I used for about three years (Stopped using it in
2001). It does a nice job with 2D. 3D beyond simple shapes is difficult,
when possible. At the time, I liked its' way of doing things better than
Vector's.
If you are just starting out, I'd not recommend BobCAD: too much needs
to be explained, and the patternmakers I worked with at the time found the
help file and support seriously lacking.
For starting with CAM, good help files and technical support are quite
important. Dolphin and VectorCAM have good reputations on this list.
Download the both demos, and try them side by side.
Depending on what you want to spend, OneCNC and VisualMill4.0 are a
step up from those. ($1.5k to $2.5k now, I think)
CAD has evolved through line drawing, wireframe, surfaces, to solids.
BobCAD is at the wireframe era. You'll just need to think lower level
geometry and toolpath construction, rather than point and click on a surface
or solid.

Regards,

Keith

Note: As others have mentioned, BobCAD/Dolphin/Vector are used for drawing
and to generate CAM g-code toolpaths (data). Step and direction is a
function of the CNC machine control that reads your g-code.
