If it's like a stepper, yes, you can take the shaft out.

This will happen. You will never get it back together again, if it's
like a stepper.

If you have a lathe, why not build a shaft coupler? If you make a
rigid coupler, and the 1/4 inch coupler is flexible, you still have
the flexibility.

I'd consider an end cap, if you cannot just build a coupler as is.

One tip, do not tap the coupler before you ream or drill it, the hole
will wander.
