Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] oscilloscope for CNC

Hi Tanya;

Its been awhile since I have purchased a scope, so I won't even try to
advise on model numbers or vendors.

The first decision is analog or digital. Digital is highly prefered
for some things but analog scopes do (did) handle xy mode operation
better. XY mode can be very handy for certain types of feed back
devices, for example analog encoders or interferrometers. So if your
looking at digital (reccomended) then you should evaluated your need for
XY operation and the digitals scope performance in that mode. Except
for the XY issue I'm highly biased in favor of the most digital scope
you can find that meets all your needs.

Ideally each input channel would be isolated from each other and ground,
this is especially important with larger drives. The scope should
handle a wide range of input voltages. The ability to store a large
number of data points is always handy, as is an accurrate timebase.
The scope should support a scroll mode of operation. Color is nice.
Ideally the digital functions would include period measurements,
counting, frequency readout, voltage measurements, various math
functions, printing and a host of others. Printing to disk or paper
can be surprisingly handy.

To get into specifics is a little difficult when it comes to scopes, as
the application defines the needs. That being said I would suggest
that the units analog bandwidth be atleast 100MHz and possibly alot more
depending on interests.

Ideally this will all come in a tiny handheld device that uses no
power. On the other hand such devices get "borrowed". To that end,
if you don't expect to travel much, a scope on a scope cart is very
nice. Generally though the larger scopes will need assitance in some
form or another with isolation if isolation is required on your equipment.

thanks
Dave
