I've used a Crydom D2W202F solid state relay (available for about $8
from Digi-Key) to control spindle relays, solenoid valves, etc. They
work quite well from parallel port signals. they work best when the
+ terminal is connected to +5V from the computer, and the - pin
is connected to the parallel port signal.

These relays switch up to 2A at 240 VAC. They work fine on 24 V AC.
I don't know if they will work properly on 12 V AC. For DC, there are
other SSR models that can do it. You'd need an SSR specifically made for
DC output.
