Measuring backlash is pretty simple if you are looking at the
thousandths.
put a dial indicator on the spindle, aligned with the axis in
question.
clamp a block or stop on the table and move the table to allow the
indicator to contact the block. zero everything. (axis and
indicator)
move 0.1" you should get exactly 0.1000 movement since you had to
approach the block in this axis and have already taken up the
backlash.
reverse and move 0.1" whatever you are off is your backlash.
The more sensitive your indicator, the better the accuracy of the
test.
