Eric, I am under the belief that tachs are just small motors putting
out a voltage proportianal to rpm. If that were the case you would
have tach out,+ -, and encoder supply, + -. Maybe it is possible
that both of these components can share the + - lines. I have not
worked with motors that have both of these components built on.

generators-- the power comes in on the 12V line. I'm pretty sure most
reasonably equipped robots come with both t/g and encoders. Encoders
aren't enought to get fast stable movement. Do tachs require power? i
think not.
