Jon -- don't do it you'll break it. The highest form of reverse engineering
is to make something work while knowing the least possible about it!
Just hook up the 12v and ground and watch the bits flip from the encoder.

Did you figure out the motors? Does the encoder/tach leads go to the motor
controller or to another board?
