Jon, Eric's original idea that there is a encoder and tach
output surely seems to be correct. I made a mistake and
assumed that there was only 5 wires, and there really is
seven, as you stated in your original post. I must have
mis read your original post (oops). Most of the encoders
I have come across have small plastic covers that can
be removed to expose the wheel and electronics. Just
make sure you connect power to the right wires.

Well, I'm hardly an expert here, but there's also pins labeled
Common, +12v, and Ground, so I'd think that's what is supplying
the encoder. Heck, maybe I'll try opening it up and seeing what's
inside!
