If I am not mistaken, 5 wire motors actually have 4 coils with 1 common
connection and can only be driven unipolar; 5 phase motors have 10
wires. The 5 wire motor is effectively what you would get if you connected
the 2 centre taps together on a 6 wire motor. To check this, select one of
the 5 wires & mesure the resistance between that and each of the other 4 in
turn. If you happen to have picked the common wire as the first wire, the
resistance readings will all be the same. Otherwise, one of the readings
will be half the value of the other 3, and the second wire that gives the
1/2 reading is the common connection.
