William,

Literally, for some experience with G-code as painlessly as
possible, do your sketches on graph paper and write the G-code from
that. You can design in CAD, export the design in a *.dxf format,
convert the *.dxf file to G-code, but you asked for the most
painless way to get experience writing G-code. Everyone has their
favorite CAD software to do this, so if you inquire, be ready for a
barrage from the salesmen.

There are a number of computerized tutorial aids available to
learning to write G-code, one of my favorites is the freeware
AutoEditNC at http://www.betatechnical.com/autonc.htm
