If you are looking for gaining experiance, I have always said do
simple stuff by hand coding.

Find something you need to put a hole into. do circular
interoplation, tool offset, rough and finish cut. make the part.

find some square, a keyway, heatsink or pocket or something, feed
rates, cutting depts, tool offsets, rough and finish cuts.

The software is not hard, I use Excel for most of my work, but do
some in WORD.

As you learn the basics, you will one day be really happy you can
look at a couple hundred lines of code and KNOW what is happening.
