Because there are two rollers, one on each side of the cam. If the cam
path is 90deg from the axis, the path is full width. If the path is at
a 45deg angle, the path is narrower. Hold two pens or pencils together
and draw a wave, you'll see the distance between the lines narrows. It
also isn't a simple matter of offsetting one line vertically from the
other, since you have to account for the diameter of the rollers.
