Backlash on Harbor Freight Mini Mill

In the Photos section of this group there is a concept drawing of a
screw-nut modification to reduce backlash. It is photo 17 of 63.

1) Has anybody tried this approach to reduce backlash on those
mills? How well did it work?
2) Does anybody have any better inexpensive method to reduce
backlash? I'd rather not replace everything with ballscrews and
ballnuts or similar more expensive approaches as I don't use it
enough to justify spending a lot of cash.
