brecoflex makes one heck of a nice polyuretane belt, I have several here
that I've been playing with and you can get quite a bit of
tension on them, one problem with cutting foam is that there will be
dust everywhere, I am willing to bet that 2 11 foot leadscrews and
bellows would eat up a good chunk of your budget. where are you located,
as I'm sure there are several people on this list that are reasonably
close to you, would allow you to see first hand and decide for yourself.
I have a 8'x12' router, gantry weighs over 1000lbs, running 820 watt AC
servos, with a rack and pinion drive, acceleration and rapids can be
really scary, the machine rapids at 600 ipm, and I've run it at 1000
ipm, but it really starts getting into structural issues on accels and
decel... Next step is to remove the rack and replace it with the timing
belts. Ideally, motion should be quieter and repeatability and total
accuracy "should" increase quite a bit. I know of several commercial
router builders that are or have used breco timing belts, 1" wide or
wider that have similar performance. Realize these aren't normal rubber
belts, but pretty hard plastic type with steel wires. They work, and
installed tooth down, are fairly immune to dust and crud. Just my $.02
