I would have to agree with this. There are a few things in 274D (I have
the Feb 8, 1980 edition) that might be guiding if not helpful in writing
a CNC control. But if you are just looking for an understanding of CNC,
you just won't find anything in 274D that is very helpful. Most of the
older books on CNC programming using G-code will have the essentials of
274D incorporated in their text. They will also be explaining or
teaching through examples, which I find to be a lot better than trying
to imagine what 274D is trying to standardize.

One good book I have found is "Computer Numerical Control, from
Programming to Networking" by S. C. Jonathan Lin. ISBN 0-8273-4715-4
It is very easy to understand This book handles the math, G-codes, APT,
and is pretty much just a textbook.
