Didn't matter the manual warned about waxes in some lubricants plugging
up the orifices... Well sure enough, the 'oil is oil' stuff plugged up
the distribution manifold and starved the machine for oil. Ball screws
were the worst hit, both acquiring noticeable backlash. Machine remained
serviceable after fixing the lube situation, but was never as accurate.
Lucky for us the ways were hard chrome, and while they'd gotten dry,
they didn't score.
Lesson to hobbyists with older industrial machines: Specified lubricants
might seem expensive, until you get a quote of several thousand dollars
to rebuild or replace the ballscrews.
