And these orifices can be pretty small. If the machine came with a
recommendation for one or more lubricants approved, use them. Years ago,
working in a sheetmetal shop that had a Wells Index, we'd run out of the
Vactra lube it called for. I asked the boss to buy more, and in his
typical "I'm going to make the world work the way I think it should", he
declared oil is oil and use "this stuff here".
Didn't matter the manual warned about waxes in some lubricants plugging
up the orifices... Well sure enough, the 'oil is oil' stuff plugged up
the distribution manifold and starved the machine for oil. Ball screws
were the worst hit, both acquiring noticeable backlash. Machine remained
serviceable after fixing the lube situation, but was never as accurate.
Lucky for us the ways were hard chrome, and while they'd gotten dry,
they didn't score.

Lesson to hobbyists with older industrial machines: Specified lubricants
might seem expensive, until you get a quote of several thousand dollars
to rebuild or replace the ballscrews.
