I was junking out a 5" floppy drive for parts a while back and discovered
that the stepper that moved the heads track to track translated the circular
motion of the motor to linear motion by way of a flat steel spring wound
around a spool fastened to the shaft of the motor. The problem with that
translation is resolution vs travel. You need some way to gear down the
stepper and that will introduce backlash and repeatability problems. I did
like the idea of "steel" belts though.
