Inexpensive ACME (lead) screws

I am working on converting an existing manual panagraph engraver to a
CNC (2 axis) system. I have a good understanding of the software,
motors (probably use steppers for low cost), and their associated
motor drivers. However my problem is in the hardware. I have
searched a couple websites to get pricing on a x-y manual table that
will be controlled with the steppers but they want $1,000's for
these. I have contemplated buying the lead screws and pillar blocks
and building my own x-y table but the cost of the lead screws
($100's) seem to make this also overcostly. Is there any surplus
dealers that can sell lead screws (and bearings) for reasonable costs
(i.e. $20-$50)? I have searched ebay for parts but they only have
1pcs. I need to match the x & y turn ratios so I don't have to deal
with interpolation issues.
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Greg
