The Gecko 201 and 210 do exactly that. Essentially, all microstepping
drives do this in some fashion. It does produce a much smoother
motor operation as well as preserving useful torque at the highest
speeds possible.

No, magic sine waves are used for running AC motors at constant speed.
Although there is some relationship, the magic sine waves are much more
useful for driving motors at a steady speed without rapid speed changes.
