Ray,
All microstepping drives use sin/cos in adjacent coils. Type "a3977"
into a yahoo search, and take a look at the spec sheet for this
microstepping chip (used in the xylotex driver, among others). It
shows a table of the values used for the various microstep
resolutions...
FWIW, I never really "got" what Don was trying to do with the magic
sine waves. But I do know he's at : http://www.tinaja.com (note
the "i")

like motor construction mean that often the current(amps) values used
are NOT the directly looked-up sin/cos values for the desired angle...
