I would like to be able to answer this with a specific number, but the best I
can come up with is "several inches"...

There's too many variables. One of them is what sort of circuitry the encoder
wires feed into, for example. I was once called in to help troubleshoot an
industrial machine, which had several boards full of CMOS chips running
things. One of the problems I nailed was a bad sensor (not sure about the
chip that was reading the sensor, but that's another story) -- they were
running the wiring for this sensor _inside the same conduit_ as some 440VAC
stuff!

It's a good idea to keep this stuff separated, anyhow.
