You can look at my links below. Although much smaller, my gantry
weighs about 1100 lb. With low friction linear rails the servo size is
pretty small...nema 56 size. The system can do about 1g. What does that
mean? Well since the EFFECTIVE mass is about 1000kg and the force is
10kN or so accel= F/m= 10 m/sec^2 = 1g. That results in corner radii
of v^2/a so at 10 cm/s it can do .01/10 or 1 mm radius.
I have done a 20x20 foot pick and place gantry machine. I think your
20x40 foot one will have a much heavier gantry than mine, unless it
is carbon fiber or something.
Yes, you would require more power than a Gecko.
Since this stuff seems more in the commercial realm feel free to
contact me off list. We offer some engineering services for such
designs.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] LARGE Gantry table
Can someone point me in the direction of suppliers for motors/drives
for LARGE gantry machines... I'm talking 20'x40' cutting area. Off
the top of my head, I'm guessing the gantry might way a half ton or
more. I'm very familiar with smaller steppers/servos, I just don't
quite understand where/what route you take when talking about large
machines that need significant torque to make a 1000lb gantry change
directions on a dime. It seems you need an ac servo that would run
off of signicantly more power than a gecko or similar can provide.
Any help/links would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
