A VFD is a Variable Frequency Drive that's often used to convert
1 Phase power to 3 Phase, but it does much more. It also acts as a
speed controller, giving you the capability of dialing in speeds. It
replaces the need for a phase converter, but gives you far more
versatility, in a very small box. If you go into Google, or another
search engine, and search for VFD, you'll get a better idea of what's
available.
