EMC as DRO?

Hi All,
It seems to me this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to
find the thread.
I am not looking to set my machines up as CNC stuff any time soon,
but reading the dials is getting old. I am working on getting scales
for my lathe and mill, and am wondering if EMC be used simply as a
DRO readout. Can it interface directly with quadrature scales, and if
so how? Can it do all of the functions one would expect from a DRO?
I know EMC is a (large)bit of overkill for this, but it is readily
available and the price is right. :)
Anyone else thied this?
I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks,
AL
