EMC questions

I just installed the BDI rc44 release. The install went pretty well
other than the advanced disk partitioning support and some of the
boot loader options. I'm impressed with the completeness of the
installed linux.
Now that I have the system installed and have been playing with it
for a while, I have several questions that I can't seem to find
answers for anywhere.
1) There seems to be some usefull scripts in the
emc/plat/nonrealtime/bin directory. Some are copies of tcl scripts in
the emc/tcl/sourced directory with a line to launch the appropriate
shell added. Why not just source the code from emc/tcl/sourced? Why
is all the tcl code duplicated?
2) One of the more usefull scripts, emctuning, seems to be out of
date. It has a line with "exec /usr/local/nist/emc/system". The BDI
install puts things in /usr/local/emc and I don't see any executable
called "system". What was this refering to and how do I get the
script to run? Why isn't this script included in emc/tcl/scripts to
that is shows up on the tkemc menu?
3) There is a script, emc/tcl/sysinfo.tcl, that apparently prints out
usefull system info. It attempts to cat a file "emcversion", but I
don't see this file anywhere in the emc tree.
4) I did not see a simulation configuration of emc (emcsim.run). I
attempted to build one myself but didn't have too much luck. There
appears to be several choices for the motion simulation module,
simmod, emcmotsim, and emcsegmotsim. simmod runs in the realtime
environment and appears to be out of date. emcsegmotsim appears to be
too new and is not in the rc44 release of the BDI. emcmotsim almost
works, but it gives errors about real time events being missed and
aborts when trying to run gcode. It was also difficult to get rid of
following errors. What should a simulation configuration look like?
5) Is all this just par for the course or am I missing something,
doing something wrong, a dummy, etc.?
Thanks,
