Hi John
I can give you my definitions FWIW.
A servo motor is any prime mover that is designed to be
used with a position or velocity feedback device.
It does not have to be a DC motor or even an electrical
motor!
That being said I can also give you a
set of characteristics that are typical of an electrical
servo motor as used with machine tools:
1)It often has much lower inertia than a regular motor
2) It usually is designed to operate at a variety of speeds and
is bi-directional
3) It has smoother torque characteristics (less cogging)
I will also anticipate the question "Can an ordinary PMDC motor
be used with an encoder as a servo?"
The answer is yes.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Servo Motor Make Up?
I've been sloggin' through the archives back to Jan '04, so far.
Things are getting repetitive but I can't find a simple statement on
this.
Is a servo motor simply a "normal" DC motor with an encoder?
If not can anyone refer me to a source of information on them?
Please advise. Thanks in advance, as always.
