I would say that servo motors are generally not regular DC motors to
begin with. Generally you are talking a very high quality motor with
very repeatable operating characteristics and long life expectancy. If
you include the price of a tachometer and encoder, of course it will be
more expensive than a typical DC motor.
Someone made the comment about brushless DC servo motors. Brushed DC
servo motors were around for many, many years in industrial applications
before brushless took over.
