I've been toying with some similar thoughts to Jens', but I have a more general
question. What is the best way to get a small widget of some ilk to work with a
CNC machine? There seem to be a good many things one could do with a "stupid"
stepper motor; like just run it a fixed number of steps one way or another
triggered by one input line that's either on or off. Using a whole axis seems
like a waste for two state device.

I've seen lots of control cards and devices out there, from PLCs to Basic Stamps
and questionable things on Ebay, but I really don't have a clue about where to
start except to buy some stuff and start playing with it.

Any suggestions?
