I don't know of any other software that uses the servo to go.
You might want to get on our emc IRC chat on freenode and discuss the
problems further in real time. A new program EMC2 is being developed
there.

As for homing the wrong way...of course ini parameters control that.

One aggrevating bug occurs when the the stg wakes up with seemingly
random numbers for axis positions. If the home switch is on one end
a large number may indicate a position beyond it...in that case
emc will home the other way.

Usually powering down the computer fully for a while will cure this,
but we really ought to initialize zeros or something in the position
registers so it never happens.

As far as other bugs...we need to go through them. For me emc/stg
has ben rock solid as far as reliability. I depend on it for my
living!
