It only happened once, in over 4 years of use, with a STG card. Before
I made fixes to the driver for my PPMC board set, I would see this pretty
often, but that wasn't an EMC problem, it was my driver!

No, but it should be quite obvious. Just set an offset with G54 or the
on-screen set axis function of the right mouse button, and then observe
the offset values in the little display above and to the right of the
axis displays. Then, shut EMC down and look in the file for the same
values.

Yes, this seems like a different problem than the one I mentioned above.
Since I *still* don't have my home switches set up, I can't experience your
problem with homing. I have set up home switches on a client's machine
using my USC board, and have not seen any odd behavior since we got it
set up properly.
