Ron,

Is Bobcad getting better? Yeah, Id say so. They now have a good post processor for Mach2 that they just recently added. Go to their support section and check out all the post processors, they have Heidenhein, prototrak, Fanuc etc. I've always heard that their support was somewhat suspect but, they have obviously improved this because I have no complaints. They key to success with their software I'd say is the training CD's. It's like having an instructor right with you that takes you through every phase of the software. Just pop them in the CD rom drive, watch and learn. They are about 14 hours of easy to follow complete training. I think alot of the people that complain about the software are the ones who try to learn it without any instruction, There is a definite learning curve as with any Cadcam program. Originally I used Autocad R14 and exported as DXF and brought it into Mach2 with its CAM functions, that was a real crap-shoot. The problem with this is you cannot select
toolpath direction or your starting point and for milling that is important. And to turn around the radii took alot of extra time. And if it was a polyline...forget it. Also Bobcad does alot of other functions such as: Pocketing with island(s), Engraving, Automatic roughing and finishing, engraved text on a 3D surface, Arc aligned text, Raised text, Simulation of machining the part within the Cad, Drilling and tapping cycles, Wide array of import file types, tool libraries ...etc. Yeah, its not bad at all. And I probably shouldn't say this but, they will barter with you on price. Yeah go download the V18 demo and check it out. The one thing they should have is better instruction for the demo, I think alot of people who try it, get discouraged and keep looking. Once you get a handle on it, its quite easy actually. I'm still not real impressed with the 3D portion of it but, that may and probably is alot of inexperience on my part. For the money you cant beat it. I know its working
well for me in the machine shop business. It saves me hours of programming time. Some things it does would be virtually impossible to program by hand and calculator. I've worked with it and without it and I'd much rather have it than not.

WOW !!!
I think that is the first good post I have ever seen for Bobcad CAM ,
are they getting better ?

>Try Bobcad Version 18. Its a pretty good entry level CAD/CAM program. The user interface is satisfactory. The 3-D portion is a bit weak as well as the 4th axis rotary portion and I say this because both of them are quirky however, they do work. But it does offer a post processor for virtually any machine control language. Overall for the money its a good program and the training CD's are excellent. If you are just wanting to do profile machining of different 2-D shapes it would work very well for that. Just draw or import a drawing, run it through the Bobcad post processer for your control and its ready to machine.
