Rob,
Inlaws with Mattison grinders sounds like a plan!

For tubing do affix pads to be ground as mating surfaces
for rails. Directly grinding one side of a steel tube will cause
some warping. Also as has been mentioned they are not flat.

I have another procedure for mounting ground pads for ways that I use
on tubing. The scrape grinding method is used on solids only. The pre-ground
pads
are chocked in with epoxy using a special method. It results in sub
thousandth
flatness if done carefully. Kind of like super precision bricklaying.
I need to write that up and put it in the site
with the scraping stuff. You can see some of these pads in the machine
pictures
on thr y axis.

I am trying to remember the straightness spec for astm tubing... I think
it is 1/8" IN 5 feet...something like that. Hence the need for pads.

I am looking for travels of 5' x 3' on my machine.
I'm sure with some time and well thought out elbow
grease it could be done by hand.

I have in-laws with a large Madison grinder, so I'm
going to cheat on this one and have them grind it.

Rob.
