0.001" is around 0.0254mm.

The newest commercial machine, driven by linear motors, can achieve a
tolerance of 0.001mm.

There are realistic physical limits for machines once they reach these
accuracies. For instance, to run a machine at that accuracy, you must keep
the room temperature as constant as possible. The machine's don't need to be
at a specific none changing temperature, but you're not supposed to subject
them to more than a degree or two of average temperature change per hour.
This is so that the machine expands and contracts uniformly I would expect;
rather than pretending that the problem doesn't exist.

0.002 is an achievable accuracy to expect from a home made, but it depends
what you're starting out with, what it's for and how you'll go about
achieving it.

To summarise pages worth of observations on the topic... keeping everything
else the same in a system, accuracy costs money, time and effort.
