Andy,
Can't comment on the machine itself, never seen one or the other 'in person'
and I have no experience with more than 3 axis.
Regarding the drives my vote goes for the Geckos. www.geckodrive.com Very
good stepmotor drives. I have three G210 myself and they work perfectly. If
you're not in a great hurry they have a new drive soon to be released called
G204 that seems to be THE step-motor drive.
If you're going for step & dir servos Geckodrive have that too and in you
should also take a look at Rutex. I have no personal experience with the
Rutex drives but they get good comments around places like this one.
For true closed loop analog servos I _think_ that EMC and the Servo-to-Go
card is the only way at the moment.
For breakout boards Bob Campbel has one that's been getting good reviews,
Google his site and check it out.
