When deskwinnc came out I was really impressed with the speed and the even
pulse spacing. I was able to run my knee mill at much higher speeds than
before. I only recall a few problems with deskwinnc and the interface
boards. But Otherwise I was impressed. The major disadvantage with deskwinnc
was the documentation wasn't very thorough and required several emails to
Carl to get the correct syntax for the G codes he uses.
About two years ago deskcnc incorporated deskwinnc and made the CAM and G
code interpreter into one program and subsequently came out with a 2nd
generation interface board capable of 125000 steps per second. It also add
the one feature I was really was looking for which was an encoder connection
for a lathe spindle position so that threading could be done. While it was
there to my knowledge the software hasn't been updated to actually
accomplish spindle positioning so that threading could be done. I really
like the deskcnc 2nd generation G code interpreter and think in time it will
be really great for running a my lathe. I also like the 125000 steps per
second capability. But again the documentation invites a higher degree of
customer support requirements because the documentation is to brief and not
very informative. Which is difficult for me to understand why on earth they
would not developed a comprehensive manual. It would probably cut customer
support requirements by 50% or greater. But I have to say that when I needed
supported from Fred I got it promptly.
