It takes alot larger air motor to compete with an electric motor. I have an Ingersol-rand 1/2 hand drill and Milwaukee 1/2" hole-gun. The Milwaukee electric is like 3 times more powerful. Electricity compresses the air and then that air/energy is transfered to the motor. Air is a very poor medium in which to transfer energy. Just use an electric motor and take the air out of the equation, No advantages other than longevity. Most air motors are vane type. They are all about speed and very little torque. An air motor that was capable of 1hp at 40k RPM would be very expensive. And huge.

Yaa, I'm not use to looking at the industrial air compressors but
once I found them (just now online) I see that it would take about a
15HP compressor. Pretty poor payoff- 15hp for 1hp at the spindle!
They might have other advantages that outweigh this though? Quiet?
Long life? Don't bog down as easy? Lighter (for quicker
acceleration)?
