surface slides on scraped ways. At least this is the way my
1969 series 1 is. My ways are chromed, but only 1 mating surface
is chrome. This of course has lead to the non-chrome way (under the
saddle, Y-axis) becoming very worn out after 35 years of use.
I am going to surface grind this way under the saddle to clean
it up and just leave the chrome alone. The non-chrome mating surface
of the table seems OK, probably because it has such a large
bearing area compared to the Y-axis. My knee has no chrome and
seems fairly well worn, especially on the left side.
