Sounds like a good idea. Take the bevel gears out of the mix. That would be a major undertaking though. belting a servo to the input shaft is pretty easy to do and the servo is still out of the way. I can't imagine why anyone would want to raise the knee by hand. I have no handcranks at all on my machine.

I think the motor will have no problem with clearances.
