Hay, I know just what you mean. I have been agonizing over these
same points for months. But the one thing I know for sure, is a
powered knee for Z if defiantly the way to go. I have no wish to
loose my manual spindle.

There are a lot of choices to make for knee power, and it comes down
to time, money, and what accuracy you can live with.
