Just a thought. Have you considered modifying the pedestal mount for
the nut. This is the casting that bolts to the base of the mill and
holds the Z axis nut. You could mount the nut in a large ball bearing
had have the axis drive motor rotate the nut. You would have to
lock the lead screw with a clamp of some sort. This would allow
you to continue to use the crank if you released the clamp and would
put the axis drive motor out of the way.
