The servos that I'm using had brakes in them and were removed. The Estop dump circuit is instantaneous and the machine will halt quickly due to the resistance in the belt and ways. On a Bridgeport anyway. True servos as you refer to are small diameter and long as is the armature which has very little rotor inertia as a result. The 24 VDC brake could be easily configured. It would require a 24 VDC supply independent of the main power supply. When the e-stop is pushed and drops out the DPDT relay a set of points shorts the caps through a resistor. Another set of contacts could could energize the brake/s. They really arent necessary for a large mill.

As long as we are speaking of emergency stopping, a lot of true
servo's have a brake built in. Has anyone tried using this brake
to function in an emergency stop situation?
